Christian Riese Lassen is a contemporary American painter who specializes in marine scenes executed in a hyper-realist style (or “Illusionary Realism”, in his own words). He was born in California in 1965, but moved with his family to Hawaii at the age of 11. He was intrigued by the beauties of the natural world from an early age, and the move encouraged him to turn his attention to tropical and oceanic themes. His interest in the sea also fueled his love of surfing.
Lassen received little formal education in the arts, but his mother Carol was artistically talented and she encouraged her son’s interest. Lassen had some early success designing T-shirts and selling some paintings in a small shop, but didn’t develop much national acclaim as a painter until Jona-Marie Price began marketing his work for him.
